Common smoke alarm issues
troubleshooting

Beeping or chirping every 30–60 seconds

Often caused by a low battery, battery fault, dirty sensor, expired alarm, or system error.

False alarms from cooking, steam, or dust

Some alarms are more prone to nuisance alarms, especially older or lower-quality units.

Alarm not responding to testing

This may indicate a flat battery, failed alarm, expired unit, or power supply issue.

Interconnected alarms not sounding together

There may be an interconnection fault, signal dropout, wiring issue, or incompatible alarm type.

FAQs

Why is my smoke alarm beeping every 30 seconds?
A smoke alarm that beeps every 30 seconds usually has a low battery, dirty sensor, fault, or expired unit. If replacing the battery and cleaning the alarm does not fix it, the alarm may need professional inspection or replacement.
Why does my smoke alarm go off when I cook?
Smoke alarms can be triggered by cooking smoke, steam, dust, or poor placement. Premium photoelectric alarms may reduce nuisance alarms compared with basic models.
How often should smoke alarms be tested?
Smoke alarms should be tested regularly and at least once every 12 months. In rental properties, tenants are responsible for testing and cleaning alarms during the tenancy.
Can dust cause smoke alarms to go off?
Yes. Dust, insects, and debris can interfere with smoke alarm sensors and may cause false alarms or faults.
Should I replace a smoke alarm that keeps beeping?
If a smoke alarm keeps beeping after battery replacement and cleaning, or if it is more than 10 years old, it may need to be replaced.
Can I disconnect a beeping smoke alarm?
You should not disable a smoke alarm. If the alarm is faulty or nuisance alarming, arrange a professional inspection or replacement.
Who is responsible for testing smoke alarms in a rental property?
Tenants are responsible for testing and cleaning smoke alarms during the tenancy. Landlords and property managers have responsibilities before tenancy changes or renewals.
Why do my smoke alarms go off in the middle of the night?

A common reason smoke alarms activate in the middle of the night in Queensland is humidity and condensation. As temperatures drop overnight, the air can reach dew point, causing tiny moisture particles to enter the alarm chamber and trigger it. This is especially common in homes without air conditioning running, poor ventilation, or alarms installed near bathrooms, laundries, or kitchens.

To help prevent this, keep airflow moving overnight with ceiling fans or air conditioning on dry mode, reduce indoor moisture where possible, and ensure alarms are clean and correctly located. If the issue continues, the alarm may be ageing or in the wrong position and should be professionally assessed.

When should a smoke alarm be replaced?

  • It is more than 10 years old
  • It fails a test
  • It keeps beeping after battery replacement and cleaning
  • It causes repeated false alarms
  • It is not photoelectric
  • It is not interconnected where required
  • It does not meet AS 3786:2014
  • It is damaged, unreliable, or incompatible with your system
